A 1967 coin from Canada featuring a Howling Wolf
This coin from Canada has a lot of history.  It was part of a national design contest to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Canada in 1967.  The fifty cent coin for that year featured the winning design of a howling wolf.  1967 was also the last year that the fifty cent coin was made of silver, changing the next year to coins made of nickel.

A little information about wolves in Canada:
  • Wolves don't howl to the moon, in fact it is part of their complex communication. Howling together is a social rally, expressing a hunt or their territory.
  • Wolves are very social animals and live in packs of 6 to 10 animals.
  • Wolf howls an be heard long distances, up to 10 miles away in open terrain.
  • A howl can even help a lost wolf find his way home.  They use a "lonesome howl" to signal their pack.
  • Wolves also communicate with whines, whimpers, growls, snarls, but rarely barks.
Fun fact:  In Canada, beachcombing wolves swim between islands, eating crabs, clams, and other tidbits.
