I have fostered many kittens for local rescue group.. All of them were underage and I had to feed them with a small bottle. To my surprise, each one had a distinct personality, and Mac was one of the ones that stood out.
I started fostering his litter when they were only 2 days old. Mac was bigger and friendlier than his siblings. He also had a problem, he sucked on everything including his siblings. So, right away he got his own cage right next to the others. Good news was that he didn't seem to care one bit. He had a good foster mom, and stuffed animal with a heart beat, and plenty of food. He was just fine with that arrangement.

As Mac got bigger, he just won over everyone's heart. I was working at the local Humane Society at the time, and he got to come to work with me every day and back home every night..
When Mac was about 5 weeks old, the Humane Society won an award for Best Nonprofit. About 10 of us went to the award ceremony, and of course little Mac came along too. A volunteer had made and donated some cute slings, and little Mac loved the soft flannel.
Mac sat in that sling for over 2 hours and won over everyone's heart. He was the best PR agent anyone could ask for! The photo at the top of this page is him in his sling. Cute, right?
I normally foster the underage kittens until they are two pounds, when they are big enough for neutering surgery. For most of the kittens, that is about 8 weeks old. I already knew Mac was going to be a big cat, so he always looked older than he was. He loved to play with my little dog Button, who weighs just under 5 pounds. They were a perfect match at this age. The playing got rough, with the cat winning, of course, but they also could be best friends and take naps together.
I had to hang around a while to finally catch a photo of this silly thing they often would do. Button's feet were always cold and she looked for things to sit on to keep them warm... and you guessed it, Mac was willing to be a warm place to sit.
I couldn't make this stuff up, my pets are just a little strange all on their own. I love them anyway and they fit right in to our wacky household. |
Mac was one of those special kittens, and in the end we were unable to give him up. My husband and I adopted him and he has continued to be a character and a good part of our family. I find it amusing that Mac's favorite place to sleep each night is on top of my husband. Oh, the things we animal lovers put up with! |

I cried when reading Mac's story......I have always adopted from shelters. My current cat "Mason" ( we got him from a shelter in Mason, MI ) is now 17 months old and HUGE ! He is so sweet....I just can't imagine anyone not giving a shelter animal a home ! Bless you for fostering....I wish I could do that, but I have a chronic illness and I don't think I could talk my DH into fostering, especially when I have long period of when I am hospitalized! But Bless you for adopting Mac.....he's adorable !
