This is an amazing interview by the Radiolab team.  The story is about a Deep Water Octopus, a mile down where there is no light, and her journey to guard and tend to her 160 Octopus eggs.  Something never observed, until now.

New Coin Jewelry:  Moon Gazer

Did you know that there are Designer Coins that feature artist's work?  Me neither, but I just painted this Designer coin with a rabbit that I absolutely love.  The coin came from the Anonymous Mint, and it features "Moon Gazer," by British artist Lisa Parker.   This is what they call a "Bullion" coin, in that it is made of .999 silver, and is not only beautiful but has a value in the silver it is made of.

Also fun is that they are limiting these coins to 750 total, and each one is engraved with a serial number on the side of the coin. Very special.  I have purchased 5 of these coins and painted them, and so will be a limited edition.  Not sure if I will find others that I want to paint or not, but this is a very fun start!

Why Elephants Make the Best Moms.

With Mother's Day right around the corner, I thought you might enjoy knowing a few reasons why elephants are the animal kingdoms best Moms!  It might even be fun to share this information with your Mom this Sunday.
  • Elephant mothers carry their babies for nearly 2 years before giving birth.  Babies average about 200 pounds when they are born, and then gain about 2 pounds of body weight each day after birth.
  • Elephant mothers breast feed their babies until they're 2 or 3 years old, and a baby elephant can drink up to 20 pints of milk a day.
  • Elephant mothers are the best teachers.  Elephants learn how to pick the best plants for eating, how to defend against predators and how to navigate steep embankments --- all from their mothers.
  • Elephant mothers are the best leaders.  During times of drought, the oldest female elephants can lead their herd hundreds of miles to water they visited years before.  They remember the locations!  Elephant herds are matriarchal, and herds with older, larger matriarchs tend to fare better during times of crisis because they have longer memories.
  • Elephant mothers stay with their babies forever.  By the way, elephants use their trunks to give hugs & kisses. Sweet!  Elephant Dads are not involved (sorry guys!), so Moms are basically single parents. They make sure the elephant kids are well-fed, entertained, protected and taught important lessons.
